BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington High School hasn’t had a chess team in years, but the new team made up for that by winning a state division trophy.

“It was the first year they competed again, and they brought back a state win,” Bloomington High School Principal Cindy Helmers said Friday.

The school’s newly re-established chess team placed first in Division 3A at the Illinois High School Association State Chess Finals Feb. 9 and 10 at the Peoria Civic Center.

This is the second state championship at Bloomington High School in less than one year.
