The logo was designed by a Tech architecture student, John Houser. John took the socalled “Masked Rider” logo and morphed it into a knight. We had to get permission to use this logo from Tech officials during a meeting of the committee that oversees Tech’s actual live horse – our maskot. That horse rides along the sidelines in Tech’s football games. The committee was as thrilled as I was when I saw and we generally agree that this is one the best mergers of a chess logo and university logo.
To add even more to our delight the local university “spoof” paper – the “Perversity Daily” (play on Tech’s University Daily – then our regluar student paper) ran a joke story on a side bar: “Tech’s Chess club gets new motto: Check’em Tech” – which is a spoof on the football players “Wreck’em Tech” motto. We liked the Perversities joke motto so much that we adopted it as our real motto! Thank you PD.

Logo, motto, SPICE. What more could you ask for? Perhaps a chess team fight song. I hear that the Tech music department is pretty good so a song should be easy.
