Humpy beats Martha, shares second spot
Friday, March 13, 2009
Istanbul (PTI): Top seed Koneru Humpy outwitted overnight joint leader Martha Baquero Fierro of Ecuador to jump to tied second after the fifth round of the Is Bank Ataturk Women Grand Prix chess tournament here.
The Indian Grandmaster came back refreshed after a rest day and displayed wonderful tactical acumen to wriggle out of a difficult situation and steer the complications in her favour in the second time control.
This was Humpy’s third victory following back-to-back draws.
Grandmaster Yifan Hao of China emerged as sole leader with an easy victory over lowest ranked Betul Cemre Yildiz of Turkey.
Her fourth victory in five games helped the Chinese teenager took her tally to 4.5 points out of a possible five and now stands half point clear of Humpy and Zhao Xue of China, who defeated Pia Cramling of Sweden.
The day produced as many as five decisions out of a possible six and the lone draw was played out by Elina Danielian of Armenia, who could not break the ice against Zeinab Mamedjarova of Azerbaijan.

I’m still mystified by Koneru’s 36. … Rc8 and by Fierro’s 37. Qd3. (I had commented on this earlier in another post, but Hou’s play took the spotlight there.)
Why not 37. Qxf6? Doesn’t this win on the spot for Fierro?
Hou is brutal. The way he wins is amazing . What an active play?

Just crushed Fierro. Tomorrow is the show down vs Koneru. If she wins the tournment is over for others.

Must be the wrong moves. I don’t think both players could miss it like that.
Misquoted moves: I agree. There are a couple of strange moves around those I noted. All sources currently give the same moves (meaning they are all quoting the same source), and I currently cannot download the moves from the official site.
Nevertheless, it was shocking when I first saw it as I played through the game.
