IT may look civilised, but the board game chess is a blood sport – just ask Samantha Wooldridge and Matt Watt.

Samantha, 15, of Goonellabah, and Matt, 13, of Dorroughby, were yesterday among hundreds of school children competing in the Northern Rivers inter-schools teams chess tournament at St John’s College, Woodlawn.

And both said they were in it to win.

“I like beating my friends,” said Matt.

Samantha said she enjoyed the strategies needed for the game and the level of concentration.

“My uncle taught me to play and he always beats me,” Samantha said.

The teenagers at the region’s chess competitions were easier prey, but not too easy – as Matt proved when he defeated Samantha in a game.

Tournament founder Graeme Gardiner said he liked to see the kids enjoy themselves playing chess in the same way they would be playing a game of football.

Mr Gardiner ran the event on behalf of the NSW Junior Chess League.
