black has the threat of Ne3 followed by Nc7+ leading to mate. So, b5? should not be the first move for white (though it has the possibility of leading to discovered check winning the queen)…
1. Nc5+! Ka7 or Kb8
2. Qxc6 and mate next move.
if 1…Kb6 2.b5 (threatening Qxc6)
2…PxP 3.PxP KxP
4.Qb7+ followed by checks with rook or bishop leading to mate
1. Nc5+, Kb6
2. Na4+, Kb7
3. b5, axb5
4. cxb5,
1-0
1. Nc5+!! and black cannot defend against the twin threats of Qa3 and Qxc6.
1.Nc5+ Kb6 2.Qa3 , mating
From Spain…
1)Nc5+,Kb6
2)Qa3+-
1)Nc5+,Ka8
2)Qc6+,Ka7 or Kb8
3)Qb7++
1)Nc5+,Kb8
2)Qc6+-
Looks to me like after Nc5+ followed by Qa3 black has too many problems to solve.
1. Nc5+ then Qc6 looks like checkmating soon.
1. Nc5+ Kb6 2. Qa3 Ra8 3. Qa5+ Ka7 4. Q:c7#
1. Nc5+ Kb8 2. Q:c6 and black must play …Qe4 and …Rd5 to avoid immediate mate.
Other K moves also lose quickly.
1. b5 should win, there is nothing to do against Nc5 and Qc6 following. The best defence maybe is 1. axb5
2. cxb5 Ka7
3. Nc5 Rb8
4. Qxc6 Rb6
5. Qc7+ Ka8
6. Qxb6 and White wins
Hope that’s correct.
I think that 1.Nc5+ Kb6 2.Qa3 is more direct than 1.b5. If 2…Ra8 then 3.Qa5+ Ka7 4.Qxa6+ kb8 5.Qb7 mate.

I think the right move is 1.Nc5+ Kb6 (otherwise 2.Qxc6 +-) 2.Qa3! Ra8 3.Qa5+ Ka7 4.Qxa6 Kb8 5.Qb7++
1. Nc5 Kb6
2. Qa3 Ra8 (what else?)
3. Qa5 Ka7
4. Qa6 Kb8
5. Qb7#
Alternatively,
1. Nc5 Kc8 (Ka8, Kb8 or Ka7 2.Qc6)
2. Qc6 and there is no defense to Qa8
1.Nc5 Kb6 2.Na4 Kb7 3.b5
1. NC5+ and 2. Qa3 look very strong for white…..
1. Nc5 … 2. Qa3
in addition to my comment before.
1. b5 Sxe5
2. Nc5+ Ka7
3. Qa3 with winning attack
My bet is to start with the straightforward Nc5+ and only to follow up with b5 after black’s Kb6 (only move to not lose on the spot). Looks terrible for black.

Hi Susan Polgar,
Well,as usual other brilliant minds here in this blog has already given the best moves.
To my part,I give here one easy set of moves for white to win.
1.b5 Ne3
2.Nc5+ Ka7
3.Q*c6 Rb8
4.Q*a6+ mate

b5 and Nc5+ are both given as answers. Can anybody prove one of those is wrong, or are they both okay?
I still don’t think b5 is a good first move…
black can reply with 1…Ne3
2.Nc5+ Kc8!
Now, if 3.Qxc6?? Black can mate starting with Nc2+ followed by queen sacrifice ending with Nc2# (I forgot the name of this mate).
So, White will be forced with
3.Rc1 Nc2+
4.RxN QxR
now if 5.Qxc6??
black will mate with Queeen Qd1#
white can play, 5.Qa3! threatening mate, but, I think black will have good chances with
5…Qd1+
6.Bc1 a5!
white can’t take the pawn due to QxB mate threat..
7.Kb1 RxP
8.QxP Kd8
black king escapes and also black gets all his pieces into play and soon the black bishop will also come into play with BxP…
maybe there is still mate chances for white, but b5 just makes it prolonged and also opens up lot of opportunities for black
