TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) – Arizona students went head to head, trying to out-smart each other in the game of chess.

More than 500 students from around the state competed in the Arizona State Scholastic Chess Championship. It took place Sunday at the Holiday Inn, Palo Verde.

Kindergarteners through high school seniors competed in six divisions.

“Chess has always been a great game to teach people and kids because it does teach them something different,” said Enrique Huerta, chief tournament director. “Thinking ahead and being careful about their decision are lessons they can take away from the games.
