The resignation by Mr. Joel Channing from the USCF Executive Board is now official. He is probably one of the most successful business people who were ever elected to the USCF Executive Board.
This is from the NYT: ‘…Channing, who was in the third year of a four-year term, said that he had been become increasingly frustrated by the workings of the federation. Channing, who owns a real estate development company (it put up PGA Commons West, above, among other developments), said, “My original reason for running for office was to try to bring business experience to the board, which I found sorely lacking, and to run a professional organization and that was a lot more difficult than I thought. There is something about business, it is more like a team sport. You want to have a win-win situation. That is the way to get things done effectively. The way that things work with chess, it is a zero-sum game and that is not a good environment for getting things done.”’
I fully agree with Mr. Channing. This is a man who has successfully built companies and worked on projects far bigger than the USCF. I have been to his home. I have visited him at his office. He is well respected in his industry and community.
But when it comes to this federation, it is nearly impossible to succeed. Instead of allowing or asking the most qualified and most experienced people to help the USCF, the opposite happens.
And this is why the USCF continues to fail miserably, losing money year after year. The losses this year may exceed $100,000 and the USCF is expected to lose even a lot more next year. How many good volunteers, sponsors, organizers and members has this organization lost? How many more good people will we have to lose before we can turn the USCF into a professional and viable organization?
In the mean time, I will continue to work hard to positively promote chess, chess and education and chess in the schools, as well as obtaining and awarding chess scholarships for young players, organizing world class tournaments for our professional players, and much more.
This is sad. What will it take for the USCF to change? Will it ever change?
I worked for a USA Company which had the rule:
“You are allowed to criticise as long as you propose a solution which is in at least your view, better. ‘Negative criticism’, i.e. just carping, gets you fired.”
It’s a good rule.
Thank you for all you have done for the USCF Mr. Channing. Don’t let a few idiots get you down.
What we need is some serious chess-lovers who are willing to work free of charge in their spare time to solve the problems with USCF. Not a bunch of money-grubbing hypocrites that are running it now!
We got rid of Channing for supporting the 2 damn foreigners. These 2 gooks are next. Then we can replace them with Donna Alarie, Brian Mottershead and Harry Payne.
Susan,
This is confusing. In the last election voters elected you and others on your slate rather overwhelmingly, I seem to recall. Hasn’t that election resulted in some important changes?
They didn’t vote for Korenman. They voted for Berry instead. This gave Goichberg the majority to continue going after his enemies like he did with GM Evans, Leroy Dubeck and others.
The Polgar Gambit is coming.
Bet on it.
I bet you we’ll be able to get rid of Polgar and deport her back to Hungary soon.

Hah! That is a laugh Mr. Laughing Laugherty!
I will laugh when you get put in prison to be constantly sodomized by the big men you put in prison while you were a pathetic crooked judge.
Wow! A new picture! This will surley confuse the idiot laugherty.
Ahhh, the same drivel from Lafferty as usual. He should go back and visit the good folks at Chessville.com again. They miss abusing him and Payne over there. 🙂
Let’s see, with Goichberg & his friends running the show, how are things working out for the USCF? Losing money, losing sponsors, accurately ridiculed as one of the worst national federations in the world, yet the same fools want to keep them in charge and lie through their teeth and use personal attacks & absolutely stupid “go back to Hungary” remarks to try and run off the very people who could actually turn that incredibly inept organization around. Does anybody see any sign that Lafferty, Goichberg, Payne, etc are actually trying to better the USCF or promote chess in the US?
Everyday we have the Laugherty, Sloani, Gordoni, Robertsi, Hankeni and Paynei show, back and forth while doing zilch for chess. But they’re good with insults and lies. What kind of obnoxious pigs would attack children and women while worshiping Sloani?
“This is sad. What will it take for the USCF to change? Will it ever change?”
Not likely. As long as people like Goichberg, Lafferty, Sloan & Payne are involved, the USCF will remain inept & corrupt. Their agenda is to protect their own egos and the financial interests of themselves & their cronies, NOT to promote chess or serve the interests of the USCF membership.
They’d rather run the USCF it into the ground and destroy it than admit they’re crooked & inept and get out of the way and let qualified people take over.
The only solution I can see is for Susan and others to start a new organization, bring in qualified people to run it, bring the professional players back (who’ll overwhelmingly support such a new organization with Susan & others like her running the show), and let the current USCF wither and die, as it’s soon to do anyway. With Susan heading such an organization, membership would likely double current USCF rolls within 3 years and FIDE would probably recognize it as the official US federation as soon as the old USCF folded.
Over and over, I’ve said it here:
Forget the USCF and begin a new organization! If Susan can turn Lubbock, TX into a chess city with major tournaments, then with the incredible support she already gets…..
it’s at least a possibility.
Begin fresh with a new American chess organization. It’s time to forget “fixing” the USCF and begin building a new organization.
“I wonder if Lafferty prefers syrup or jelly?”
Oh GAWD, please don’t post anything like that again! I laughed so hard I got strangled and sprayed coffee on my laptop!
I agree with 5:23:00 AM CDT. The USCF is broken beyond repair. Scrap it, ignore it, bypass it, and let’s start a new professionally run organization that actually focuses on the advancement of chess in the US.
Believe it or not, the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) is even worse. So cheer up America and count the days when Goichberg and company are up for re-election to the board. At least you still have legitimate elections.
And I’m not afraid to sign in as myself and not use “anonymous”
The USCF is stuck in a pre-internet mode of thinking. If you’ve ever met some of the people in power, you’d understand why. Certain board members have allowed themselves to be manipulated by other people whose ties to chess are very, very weak and/or who have personality disorders that a first year medical student could diagnose. Meanwhile I applaud Susan Polgar for working tirelessly to encourage the chess playing children of this country and for organizing great tournaments such as SPICE cup.
I think that in the next 10-20 years, we’ll see a huge payoff from all Susan’s efforts in promoting chess among children… a new crop of strong successful players.
“a new crop of strong successful players.”
Is that a target set? Just wondering. Or only a phrase?
A new organization….that is what we need. It’s time and since so many GM’s are disgruntled with the USCF, it’s logical to assume that they might be interested in a new organization.
I think many would go along with it. The USCF is slowly dying, anyway. Why wait? Begin anew.
Hey, if the good guy resigned and nobody else did, then something fishy (Rybkaish) going on?

Why resign when the game is almost over?
I can already see Sloan in handcuffs…again!
Polgar – USCF (1-0)
Doesn’t anyone think it strange the SPICE is doing so well, but USCF is in the poorhouse?
