Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Gelfand Vs Ponomariov final
It’s time for Gelfand to reach his goal after failling it for a couple of occason.
I think it’s time for Svidler…
Svidler – Karjakin final
I think Shak is smoothly and quietly advancing in this World Chess Cup. He is playing very solid. My guess is Shak winning against Svidler.
HT
I’ll go with Pono to be the first repeat winner of the KO.
Exactly as I predicted. Well except Grischuk. But still my prediction holds: the final is Shak vs. Svidler and the winner is SHAK!
I agree with HT. Mamedyarov has been playing very solidly so far and I think that he has the best chance of winning the competition.
5 of the players in the last 8 were the highest rated players in their eigth of the draw. The other 3 players were each only 20 or 30 points lower ated than the higest rated player in their eighth of the draw. Also all the lower rated players lost in the last round!
In other words it is going pretty much according to Elo in the long run- even after big upsets happened early on. However now it gets really close- apart from the 50 point gap between Svidler and Malakhov in their match, the rest range from 4 to 22 points apart only, so in such short matches it is wide open now.
I hope Gelfand fulfills his number 1 seeding and wins this though- I hope the pattern of underdogs losing continues to the end! He deserves it more than anyone having got nothing in the next cycle for coming second in the Mexico world championship behind Anand. Also he was forced not to play in the previous one in Libya due to being Isreali. He deserves another chance- and he could be a real danger in the candidate matches with his wealth of match experience and solid approach in those longer matches!
I still say Gelfand has the best chance despite being the oldest! Do not underestimate him!
would love to see Gelfand win this tournament
