Russian of the Year prize awarded in nationwide voting

MOSCOW, June 6 (Itar-Tass) – Twenty-three figures of culture, sport and science, whose achievements have been recognised in the country as the most prominent this year, have become laureates of the prize Russian of the Year.

A grand prix has been awarded to Igor Moiseyev, the permanent leader of the national dance ensemble.

Singer Dima Bilan, who has won the second place at the Eurovision competition, has been called Hope of Russia.

Film and theatre actress Lyudmila Gurchenko has been named Star of Russia.

Yevgeny Plyushchenko, the virtuoso figure skater, gold medal winner at the Olympic Games in Turin has been awarded the prize in Triumpher nomination and world chess ex-champion Anatoly Karpov has been rated as Legend of Russia.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov has been recognised as the best in the nomination Honour and Dignity and Russian Olympic Committee president Leonid Tyagachev has won in the Pride of Russia nomination.

The chief of the Russian of the Year programme’s public relations department, Yelena Simonyan, told ITAR-TASS that the winners had been determined in nationwide Internet voting.

“Members of are expert council from the number of prominent public figures, laureates of past years summed up the results,” she said.
