Its not a surprise. Hes the one with thorough experience and depth knowledge of chess. Others, you can call them, ALSO PLAYED IN THE CANDIDATES TOURNAMENT. RANKING? These guys are getting old. Anand is old but proven Chess Champion.
Anand was super steady – Aronian busted after his 1st round loss – Kramnik never found himself – Karjakin had hopes but just failed to win in his last few games. Anand is a worthy challenger, as the others don’t have any better chances against King Magnus, apart from perhaps Nakamura!
A terrific victory for Anand, who started out great in the 1st round by beating Aronian’s Marshall Attack.
When I first started seriously playing chess, a rematch one year later for the world championship was automatic , after a reigning world champion was defeated. Botvinnik benefited immensely from this. He probably would never have regained the world championship after his 1957 loss to Smyslov, if he had not had the automatic rematch in 1958 to regain the championship. Similarly with Tal, where Botvinnik won the 1961 rematch.
Anand has secured the rematch all on his own. What a feat.
Interesting that 8/14 will be sufficient to win this year’s tournament, whereas last candidates, Kramnik and Carlsen were still fighting for first place with 8.5/13 There is great parity in this year’s edition
An and was not prepared last time as he was not playing much chess and he lost game 5and 6 which were clearly drawn now he knows about the grinders game and it will be interesting rematch…carlsen beware tiger is coming to pounce on u
I still believe AGE as a definite factor in Chess. Beating the field to establish his right to take on the reigning champion is a great feat in itself. That is something which any Chess champ can be proud about, and leaving a legacy for his followers and admires. I wish him all the very best in his endeavor. Although in the previous championship I wished Magnus Carlsen 51:49 because of his age — who reminds us of our own younger son, or a kid brother, this time round my heart is with Anand 51:49 for obvious reasons. Having reached this far, Anand should attain the Zenith proving all the doubting Thomases — including yours truly — zilch.
To be honest I am much more interested in who Anand is going to pick to be his seconds and help him prepare for this match. It is was me (who am I to suggest to the great Anand), but I would say ask Peter Svidler / Ivanchuk or even Kramnik. Anand needs a massive improvement in his end game and the tenacity to play long games! I remember the time when Openings were not his forte and he changed that! This time he has to improve his end game and not lose from drawish positions!
There’s no god then.
Exactly as I had predicted. Carlsen, get ready to get spanked.
Great come back. With the determination Anand has, i think he will win against carlsen now

Big difference from the previous tournament! Even Magnus scrambled at the last few rounds.

I think that Carlsen is probably very pleased with this outcome. More time for football now.

Yeah, now everyone’s going to root for the underdog. What’s next, poor starved Palestinians finally wiping the Jews off the map perhaps?

Carlsen may have said a few things last year thinking Anand is history, but surprise!
