Vishy Anand and Rustam Kasimdzhanov to play a rapid match
The event is set to take place in March in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (updated)
The reigning World Champion Viswanathan Anand will play a rapid match against the 17th World Champion, and currently his second, Rustam Kasimdzhanov. The event is set to take place in March in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, immediately after the traditional Georgi Agzamov memorial.
Update: The match will take place on 27th March. It will consist of four games with the time control of 25 minutes plus 10 seconds increment.
Rustam Kasimdzhanov won the knockout World Championship in 2004 and held the title until 2005. Later Kasimdzhanov joined Anand’s team to help the Champion defend the crown in the matches against Kramnik in Bonn, 2008, and against Topalov in Sofia, 2010.
Most recently, Kasimdzhanov won the Rapid Championship of the 16th Asian Games which was held in November in Guangzhou, China.

Kasimdzhanov will win easily. He’s very good in rapid chess.
how can he be 17th world champion, if there are fifteen only?
What? like Rustam would even TRY to beat his boss and employer,,,,,He might have a chance,,,IF…he was not employed by the man…um…this idea is sort of a joke. If Anand wants to play such a match…why not take on someone more serious for heavens sake…I know he’d never risk it with carlsen or kramnik….but there ARE other serious kids out there who can make him sweat a bit…this is a pathetic looking match up. I think Radjabov or Karjakin would be more appropriate. In order to keep both their face..the score will be 2.5 1.5 for Anand….I’m sort of sorry to see Anand play such a fixed match.
I think Kasimdzhanov is great, but we shouldn’t mix-and-mingle the real world champions with the FIDE knockout champions. There is no possible way that Khalifmann, Kasimdzhanov, or Ponomariov would have ever come close to the title in a traditional WC cycle.
anything can happen I suppose but I agree with both comments above.
This match is not a match. Its rather silly. I sincerely hope Anand is not going into kramnik mode and just playing people everyone knows he will beat. Kramnik reminded me of Alekhine when he found every shred of reason to avoid Kasparov….remember…Capablanca was virtually shut out in the same way. Anand should play with a real player….not this dude.
