World champion Vishwanathan Anand will inaugurate the third edition of the PN Gadgil All India Open Chess Championship on August 2. Anand will also give a speech to the participating contestants and play an exhibition match with 50 young players.
Jayant Gokhale, secretary, Global Mind Sports Foundation (GMSF) said, “The tournament is being organised by the PN Gadgil Company in association with the GSMF. We will also auction a gold chess set autographed by Anand on August 2. The proceeds will be used for the benefit of visually-impaired chess players in the city.”
This will be Anand’s second visit to the city in the past four years. “We informed him (Anand) about the tournament, which is the only national level competition in India that is organised in Maharashtra. This year, we will have 150 entries from across the country and will also have nine international masters and one WGM (Woman Grandmaster), Swati Ghate, will be participating in the tournament.”
