CHENNAI: Magnus Carlsen won the Arctic Securities Chess Stars rapid tournament with a 1.5-0.5 win over World champion Viswanathan Anand in the two-game final at Kristiansund (Norway) on Monday.

Carlsen, who had struggled in the second half of the preliminary stage on Sunday, struck in the first game of the final with white when he beat Anand in 54 moves of the King’s Indian Defence. Anand could not return the compliment when he had white in the second game and drew in 28 moves of Ruy Lopez.

Earlier, Anand and Carlsen reached the final in contrasting styles. While Anand logged five points from six games, Carlsen, the World No. 1 from Norway, ended with 3.5 points.
