When I first came to Texas Tech at the end of 2005, the only thing I knew about this University is the name Bobby Knight. I knew that this is a big name school in sports. When I arrived on campus, my first reaction was WOW! The campus is BIG and it is GORGEOUS! Still I did not know much more than that. As I started to learn more about Texas Tech, I was completely amazed!
The biggest thing for me is not sports (sorry Bobby), it is education. Please don’t get me wrong, I love sports and I take my physical fitness very seriously. But as an educator, my passion is education through chess. That is why when the opportunity came up to be a part of this University, I was very pleased to accept.
When I started to work with people in College Chess such as Dr. Tim Redman (UTD), Dr. Alan Sherman (UMBC), Dr. Frank Brady (St. John’s), Jim Stallings (UTD), Russell Harwood (UTB), Gregory Alexander (College Chess), etc., I became more and more convinced that College Chess is one of the keys to motivate our youngsters to stay in chess. This is a perfect transition from Scholastic to Adult Chess.
This has led Paul and I to heavily promoting College Chess and we are looking forward to working more closely with all these wonderful people.

Go Tech! Go Susan! Go College Chess!
I am very impressed by Texas Tech also. I hope my grand daughter will go there for college. Looks beautiful and wonderful.
I have this feeling there will soon be many more requests for people to attend Texas Tech. This is going to give them a lot of publicity and awareness among parents.
I also think they were very smart in getting you on the staff. That was a great move by the university.
In addition to the univerisity we also have a Medical school and a Nursing School that both offer advanced degrees (PhD). Both of these are on the main campus which is – I am told – the second largest in the nation after the Naval Academy. Take away the runways from the Academy and Tech is #1.
Tech also has several excellent track and field athelets. One of them ran in the last Olympics.
Our chess players will have a good student life in addition to their own “sport”.
