After a 2 year retirement, the former #1 and 2005 U.S. Open Champion Kim Clijster of Belgium, defeated the #3 seed Venus Williams (former #1 and winner of 18 Grand Slams – 7 singles, 9 doubles, and 2 mixed doubles) to reach the quarter final of the 2009 U.S. Open.

During the last 2 years, she got married and had a daughter. She had to receive a wild card just to be able to participate in the U.S. Open. Kim won the first set 6-0, lost the second one 0-6, and won the third set 6-4. The last time Venus lost a set 6-0 at the U.S. Open was during her rookie year against Martina Hingis.

Nice job by Kim! It is definitely one of the feel good stories of the 2009 U.S. Open.
