Below is a post from their facebook page:
Hey, Hope all is well for everyone.
New York City Chess is up and running, ( Post Sandy ).
Chess Shop is now closed however, it was a great 40 year run but while we attempted to preserve it, The Chess Shop became more of a curiosity or portrait than viable retail environment…Indeed, those who thoughtfully bid us farewell in the final days, admittedly had never set foot in the place lol…The Chess Shop lives on though. We’ll be opening several smaller different type of sites for play, learning, competition and laughter…stay tuned.
We may still be reached for any outstanding issues @ info@chess-shop.com.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Didn’t they host Magnus Carlsen earlier this year?
nice blog !!!
Well, I am sorry to hear.
I bought my chess set there quite a few years ago, and also my digital chess clock.
I saw an article here about the fact that it had a new owner, but when I went there I was disappointed; the place badly needed remodeling. It needed paint, and new floor/rugs, whatever- it needed a new vibration, and I did not feel it had it. It really needed to get to another level in order to attract people.

I used to enjoy visiting and playing at the shop on vacations to NY City. Hopefully new and better places open up.

Could you be so kind as to update this article to say the club did not close but changed names to “The Uncommons” Also shut down is not the same as closed and this article was all wrong in the 1st place.
