It’s been a dream year for Chennai lad B Adhiban. The International Master was on a high after winning the National B chess championship at Kolkata in September.
On Sunday, he went on to capture the 47th National Premier chess championship with a round to spare. What’s more, the Std XI student, who has taken up commerce, also attained a GM norm at the event which concludes on Monday at the Goregaon Sports Club. With 9.5 points in his kitty, Adhiban ensured that a bunch of higher-ranked players — IM Sriram Jha (8), IM Sethuraman SP (8), top seed GM GN Gopal (7) and GM Thipsay Praveen (7) — bit the dust.
Playing black, Adhiban opted for the Semi-Slav opening against former junior world champion GM Abhijit Gupta of Rajasthan. After the exchange of queens, it was anybody’s game. However in the endgame, Abhijit had his nose ahead after the 54th move. On the 68th move, Adhiban made mistake of moving a pawn instead of a rook.
However, Abhijit made a blunder on the 81st move and resigned to his fate after 89 moves.
RESULTS
GM Abhijeet Gupta (7) lost to IM Adhiban B (9&1/2;), IM Sriram Jha (8) lost to IM Sethuraman S P (8), GM S Kidambi (7) drew IM Vidit Gujrathi (7.5), GM GN Gopal (7) lost to GM Abhijit Kunte (7.5), GM Arun Prasad S (7) bt S Dhopade (6.5), IM Prathamesh Sunil Mokal (7) bt GM Neelotpal Das (6.5), GM Laxman RR (7) bt IM Murali Krishnan BT (6), IM Narayanan Srinath (6) lost to GM P Thipsay (7), IM Priyadharshan K (7) bt R Sangma (6), GM Deepan Chakkravarthy J (5.5) lost to IM D Sengupta (6).

* National Premier title.
CHENNAI: At 16, Baskaran Adhiban won the National B chess title last year, thus becoming the youngest Indian to do so
December 13
On Sunday, he did even better when he won the National Premier title to his collection in Mumbai and how! The Chennai-based International Master won it with a round to spare with his defeat of last year’s World junior champion Abhijeet Gupta of PSPB and that too with black pieces.
Adhiban logged 9.5 points, 1.5 points ahead of the rest of the field. Adhiban has also bagged his first Grandmaster norm in the process,
something which he had narrowly missed thrice in the last two years.
“After beating GM Arun Prasad in the sixth round, I was confident that I could do it,” an elated Adhiban told ToI.
Adhiban’s job was made easier when his friend SP Sethuraman defeated second-placed Sriram Jha of Delhi in the penultimate round also with black pieces.
Adhiban playing black opted for Semi-Slav against Abhijeet Gupta. After exchanging of Queens, the game was going up and down favouring both the players simultaneously. But in the endgame, Abhijeet kept the advantage from the 54th move. Abhijeet made a blunder on the 81st move and Adhiban gobbled up white’s pawns to win in 89 moves. “He had the advantage but he messed it up,” said Adhiban.
The game between IM Vidit Gujrathi and GM S. Kidambi ended in a draw after 30 moves.
SP Sethuraman continued from where he left off on Saturday when he beat GM RR Laxman in the 11th round. In the 12th round, GM-elect Sriram Jha, who was in second place, lost in a semi- Slav game where after exchanging the Queens, Sethuraman won two pawns and the game.
Abhijit Kunte defeated top seed GN Gopal in Ruy Lopez. Gopal sacrificed his bishop for two pawns and exposed his opponent’s King. With regular exchange of pieces in the endgame with an extra piece, Abhijit won after five hours.
Prathmesh Mokal defeated GM Neelotpal Das in a Sicilian Defence game. Neelotpal allowed Prathamesh’s Queen to enter his territory and lost in 38 moves.
