33… c5
You are probably right with 33..c5 though it sure looks funny to lock in the own bishop like that. And while it does not “feel” right to do just that I cannot come up with a better suggestion myself.
However, I just re-played the game and have to admit that this Meran variation has become kind of a book with seven seals. Everything is hanging, sacrifices abound – I would really need to study these lines hard in order to dare playing them myself…
Blocking the bishop in does look funny, but compared to the overwhelming importance of blocking the white rook out, it must be right.
