I think Rgh3 should do the trick. Enjoy you blog very much. Tried to get to Kansas last month to be at this festival for peace, but…anyway, keep up the great work. I hope your efforts bear fruit. I have four daughters and none play chess. What a shame.
Main idea is:
1.Qf6+!! Bxf6
2.gxf6+ Kg8 or Kh8
3.Rxh7!! Kxh7
4.Rh3+ Kg8
5.Bh6! with no defense to
6.Bg7 and
7.Rh8 mate!
Great stuff! So, the best option for black would have to be
2… Qxf6
3.exf6 Kxf6
4.Bxc5
in which case black’s endgame is hopeless being a piece down.
Thank you Susan for the great brain workout!
1.Rgh3 can be defended by Rh8
Rxh7 leads to mate no matter what black does (e.g., 1.Rxh7 Kxh7 2. Rh3+ Kg7 3. Qf6+ Bxf6 4.gxf6+ and now if 4… Kg8 then follow kasmeri’s main idea with 5.Bh6 etc. but if 4… Qxf6, then 5.Bh6 Kg8 6.exf6 followed by 7. Bg7 and 8. Rh8).
a better move order seems,
1. Rh7+! Kxh7
2. Qf6! Bxf6
3. Rh3+ Kg7
4. gxf6+ Qxf6 (threat Bh6 and Bg7)
5. Bh6+! Kg8 (Kh7/Kh8 Bg5+)
exf6 and Bg7 with Rh8 to follow can’t be stopped
Ah, auspicious replied at the same time…my reply was meant for kasmeri
There is a similar position analysed by Aagaard in his DVD Attacking Chess, Szmetan – Garcia Gonzales, where white played Qh5! However, his bishop was on d4, not e3, and he could sacrifice the other bishop to get the Black pawn e6 out of the way.

1.Qf6+ would be my move as well.
I didn’t like the immediate Rxh7 because this gives black time for g5, freeing g6 for the king. For example:
1.Rxh7+ Kxh7 2.Rh3+ Kg8 3.Qf6 Bxf6 4.gxf6 g5 5.Bxg5 Re8 6.Bh6 Kh7 7.Bg7+ Kg6 or
1.Rxh7+ Kxh7 2.Qf6 Bxf6 3.Rh3+ Kg8 4.gxf6 g5 and so on.
Even though the black king looks kinda unsafe there, white doesn’t have a lot of material left to mate it.
I think kasmeri nailed it right on.
I did not work anything out on my own. but did work over everyones analysis with thought. and I think in the end Kasmeri has it correct.
Now if I was playing I would not play Qf6+. no way. I probably would play Rgh3. and double up rooks. after Rh8 by black I would probably move the bishop off e3 to avoid the pawn fork on d4. then if black supports the bishop on b7 against the queen I would move the knight away and then the queen when he finally moves the pawn forward. the entire game for me would be a mess and i probably would lose another game.
But now instead of throwing the board and peices across the room. yelling out and stomping out of the room. I would simply say.
Susan Polgar told me to lose with dignity. what does that mean. LOL.
