Russia is poised to win Gold in both Open and Women’s Olympiad. They also have a record 8 teams in Khanty-Mansiysk. In my opinion, this would be one of the biggest upsets in Chess Olympiad history if Russia fails to produce Gold. In fact, they may even have a shot at 2 Gold and 2 Silver team medals or more plus individual medals.

The Chess Olympiad 2010 will take place in Khanty Mansiysk. As a host country it is entitled by FIDE rules to get 2 men and two women team (the so called first team and youth team) participating in the event.
According to the Olympiad rules, “2. The organizing federation shall be entitled to enter a second team (“B” team). If there is an odd number of participating teams the organizing federation has the right to enter a third team (“C” team).” This is, in case there are odd number of teams one more is added to have everyone playing. However, “If the “C” team is paired and plays round 1 it shall remain in the tournament to the conclusion even though a team or teams dropping out or a new team or teams arriving subsequently results in an odd number of teams still in competition.
As Chessdom.com informed in a preview article, the odd number of teams in the open section produced a Russia 3 team.
However, in the pairings of round 1 appear 5 men and 3 women teams, making their total number 8.
The reason to getting Russia 4 team in the open section might be the late cancelation of Romania due to internal problems. If Russia 3 was promised to participate in the event, then the Russia 4 team could have been needed to balance out odd number of teams. The logic behind the including of Russia 5 could have been the same – Russia 4 is promised participation and one team failed to arrive, thus Russia 5 is included to have even number of participants.

The rules of chess tournaments seem rather, well, byzantine, which I guess explains a bit why Russians do well in them.
Weird decision, actually. Russia has 45 active players over 2600, so they could introduce at least 10 competitive teams. 🙂
And here we see very strange team compositions: not strong enough, not entirely local, not composed of chess prodigies only, etc.
I am rooting for Russia women’s B team with Pogonina and Ukraine men’s team sans Karjakin 🙂
I think Alexander Morozevich should have at least made the 5th team.
Well, if the Russians don’t win at least one team medal, they will look rather foolish, won’t they. On the other hand, if any of the Russian teams DO win a medal, this may go down in history as the Olympiad that was – well – people can draw their own conclusions about what happened behind the scenes to so favor Russia with 8 teams to everyone else’s one. Yeah, a real fair Olympiad.
