First ever Chess player from Northern Cape to be selected for SA team

Bernize and her twin sister, Marelize, were chosen last year for the NC chess team that participated in the SA junior chess championships that was held in December 2010 at Jhb university. At this event almost 2000 kids from around the country participated.

Out of each age group ten players were selected to participate in the SAJCCC (SA junior closed chess championships). This is a very prestigious event where only the cream of SA’s chess players are invited. Both Bernize and Marelize were selected for the u10 girls section in this 9 round Tournament. At the end of this tournament the top 3 would get their national colors to participate Internationally.

As fate would have it they draw each other in round 9 and both of them was in a position that a win will get them in the top 3 but a lose would throw them out of the team. After a 2hour battle, 39 moves later, Bernize came out as winner. She is the first Northern Cape chessplayer ever to receive her National Colors. She will now participate in the World Youth Chess Championships 17th – 27th November, 2011 in Caldas Novas, Brazil.

This page main purpose is to raise funds for Bernize & Marelize van der Walt. Bernize was selected to represent South Africa in the World Youth Chess Championships in Brazil later this year. To participate aproximateley R50 000 ($8000 US) must be generated in funds……..
