Aquandah Lifts Chess Trophy

Francis Anquandah scored four points to win the maiden Discovery Tel National Chess Championship played at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra on Saturday.
He was followed by Kojo Hasford with 3.5 points, while Kojo Bonsu, Michael Ackam and Edward Thompson shared the third to fifth positions with two points each with the sixth position going to Sekou Nkrumah who had 1.5 points.
The one-day event which was aimed at selecting a national champion and players for the national team, was sponsored by Discovery Tel Ghana Limited, an internet service provider.
Anquandah has thus been crowned the National Champion for the year 2009 with the feat while the best of six players who took part in the event have been selected to form the national team.
The six were selected from 14 players who took part in a hectic justifier at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra last two-week Mr Ebo Spio, General Manager of Discovery Tel Ghana Limited who presented the prizes to the winners urged the Ghana Chess Association to train more youth to develop their mental capabilities.
He pledged his com-pany’s commitment of supporting the develop-ment of the sport in the country.
Mr Dominic Owusu Sekyere, Chairman of the Ghana Chess Association commended the company for sponsoring the event and called on other cor-porate bodies to support the Association in its developmental efforts.

I believe the managers of Ghana Chess are up to the task and I say congrats to you all.By the way I learnt the women played as well why is there no news on their competition I am sure Susan Polgar a chess a and a woman would not forgive you guys for downplaying the women event.
