Sofia was picked to host the showdown for the world chess crown, giving Bulgarian challenger Vesselin Topalov the home ground advantage against India’s Viswanathan Anand. The match will be played on April 5-25, 2010.
World chess federation FIDE picked the Bulgarian capital, which offered to spend three million euro on organising the event and a further two million euro in prize money, over Turkey and Singapore.
“The letter from [Prime Minister Boiko] Borissov tipped the scales in our favour,” Topalov’s manager Silvio Danailov said. “After it was read by FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov at the FIDE congress, everyone voted in favour of our offer.”
Topalov and Anand will play 12 matches for the title. In case of a draw the winner will be decided in a tie-break of four rapid chess games.

Bulgaria was the worst choice of the three.
But the most obvious one considering the fact Topa always gets his matches on home soil.
Anmyone know if Bulgaria is considered a safe place for Americans to visit? Where would one check on such things?
I was wondering the same things. Is the US save to visit for Bulgarians given the high level of crime particularly in some of the big cities?
How is Topalov even in this? Gets thrashed by Kramnik in Elista then play a rematch for the World Championship, which is not true anyways, since FIDE made Kramnik illegally give it up in Mexico City and then redefend for it as the challenger. Both Anand and Topalov have pathetic records against Kasparov, who is still the highest rated player. The world should not accept coffeehouse chess matches for the World Championship and let Kramnik defend the title the true way.
Actually Topalov currently outrates Kasparov 2813 to 2812. Ofcourse Kasparov has been retired for years so it doesn’t mean anything.
Of course neither Bulgaria nor USA are safe to visit. Stay at homes and follow news on this blog is your best bet. Hahahahahahahahahaha.
‘The world should not accept coffeehouse chess matches for the World Championship’
FIDE gets 20%, you stupid.
‘Is the US save to visit for Bulgarians given the high level of crime particularly in some of the big cities?’
There is no crime in the US. The only crimes are pre-arranged draws.
It’s interesting how Anand’s weak managing team got swindled into playing in Bulgaria.

Susan should have comed to live in Bulgaria. We could have made her world champion again.
My only interest is too see Jenny Shahade’s next video. All else is mediocre news. And, can someone ask her to die her hair, please?
Not nice to make fun of Shahade. She’s trying her best. Give her a break.
Bulgaria is a much safer place than many US cities, crime-wise.
Bulgaria, Turkey and Singapore. Why no offers to host the match from India?
‘Why no offers to host the match from India?’
We will never know. It’s great for chess that three countries were very interested to bid. I applaude all three.
Susan,as a small girl ,you’ve played a lot of games in Bulgaria with your sister, let say Plovdiv for example. Can we consider this “a dangerous place”??
‘Can we consider this “a dangerous place”??’
You got’ta be kidding. Bulgaria is most beautiful, man.
Here’s the answer to the safety issue…
