World chess champion Magnus Carlsen’s rating tumbles more than 20 points after his disasterous Norway Chess tournament

Magnus Carlsen lost more than 20 rating points at Norway Chess and will have to work hard to overcome his rivals in the Grand Chess Tour standings.

The winner of the tour is the player with the highest number of tour points accumulated at Norway Chess, the Sinquefield Cup and the London Chess Classic.

The Grand Chess Tour winner will claim the $75,000 first prize from a $150,000 bonus pool, which is in addition to the $1,050,000 (£670,000) in prize money at stake in the three events.

Norway Chess final scores, and Grand Chess Tour points in brackets:

  1. Topalov 6.5/9 (13);
  2. Anand, Nakamura 6 (9);
  3. Giri 5.5 (7);
  4. Caruana, Vachier-Lagrave 4 (5.5);
  5. Carlsen, Grischuk 3.5 (3.5);
  6. Aronian, Hammer 3 (1.5).

In the last round, Carlsen lost to Jon Ludvig Hammer.
