Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Chanda holds Short, in joint lead.
Three players share the top spot
Adhiban draws with GM Eltaj Safarli
KOLKATA: Indian Grandmaster Sandipan Chanda drew with English GM Nigel Short on the top board in what looked like a crucial game in the race for leadership in the sixth round of the fourth Kolkata Open chess tournament at the Gorky Sadan on Sunday.
Joining him at the top of the points table were two other GMs, defending champion Viktor Laznicka of Czech Republic and Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem, with five points each.
Eight players shared the second spot with 4.5 points and 19 were in the joint third place half a point behind thus promising stiff competition in the next four rounds.
Grover bounces back
The day’s hero was undoubtedly young Fide Master Sahaj Grover. After suffering a crushing defeat in the fifth round, Grover bounced back to beat Azerbaijani GM Gadir Guseinov.
In a Sicilian defence dragon variation, Grover counter attacked to upset the opponent. He won the queen for rook and was set to win another piece when Guseinov resigned on the 35th move. The win enabled Grover to jump to four points and he will take on Indian GM G.N. Gopal in the seventh round.
Short went for an unusual opening and managed to get equality very quickly in the opening. Chanda had space advantage on the king side. He castled on the queen side and Short played defensively to get some counter play before both decided to sign the peace treaty in 29 moves.
Laznicka scores win
Laznicka played an attacking game with the black pieces against Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman and won in 55 moves. Liem defeated GM Enamul Hossain of Bangladesh in 42 moves. Hossain played the Kings Indian defence.
The Vietnamese GM gave up a piece in the middle game to obtain two passed pawns on the queen side. When his pawn proved to be unstoppable, the Bangladeshi GM gave up the fight in a hopeless position.
International Master B. Adhiban played another impressive game to hold the higher ranked GM Eltaj Safarli of Azerbaijan in 26 moves.
Fide Master Vidit Santosh Gujrathi held another GM Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus and Shyam Nikhil drew with Gopal.
