Starting next Sunday and going for nine more days is the 2008 Berkeley Invitational, an annual chess tournament that features the best of the best, the most elite of the proven, those Mr. Universes of the intellectual realm that read the dictionary just to break a mental sweat.

Yes, we know what you’re thinking: “But Clog! I am le tired of winning chess tournaments. A grandmaster has to stop sometime, and I want my son Bertolo to feel the passion of chess. But he is no grandmaster, so he cannot gain the free entry! Is there no way for him to enter?”

As it turns out, there is! (For a fee, of course). The tournament is open to all players with a fide rating of over 2200, though it may be that registration for this year is over. In any event, it looks to be as exciting, fun-filled and action packed as only non-contact chess can be.

What: 2008 Berkeley International
Where: Berkeley Chess School
When: Dec. 14 to Dec. 23
Why: To destroy the minds of inferior mortals.
