During the Opening Ceremony, German’s best female players IM Elisabeth Paehtz, IM Ketino Kachiani, WGM Vera Juergens and WIM Jessica Nill played clock simuls against 8 German celebrities.
In the Women’s World Chess (Soccer) Cup, there will be more than just chess skills required. Soccer skills are also needed! The ability to score soccer goals (penalty kick style) will come into play on MANY occasions such as tie-breaks, choosing colors, etc.
The technical rules are basically identical to the World Cup Soccer rules. I did not know about the soccer skill thing and therefore I did not practice my penalty kick at all. That will be a big disadvantage!
All I can say is I will try to do my absolute best 🙂 Win, lose or draw, this will be one of the most unique events I have participated in.
I was also told that the top 4 games will be broadcast LIVE on chessbase.de or basically the German playchess server. Here is the link to the chessbase site. I will be busy playing but if someone can find the exact link to the LIVE games, please post it in the comment section of this blog.
This is fantastic though! Chess and soccer!
Me again, because I forgot to mention that there also is an English version of the web site, of course, which is http://www.playchess.com/.
Cheers,
Bernd
Sorry for the spamming, but it seems that I write like I play (very badly…): The room on the server is “Broadcasts”, of course, not “Tournaments”.

Why was Kosteniuk not invited?
Many people want to her play against Susan.
@Why was Kosteniuk not invited?
Because Russia did not qualify for the soccer world cup. The ladies represent the countries that took part in the World Cup.

@frenchplayer:
I think there were some mistakes on the chessbase site, i.e. it should be “Monika Socko (2479)” playing for Poland (and not “Adam Hunt” but “Harriet Hunt” playing for England).
Bernd
@Bernd – the name of the game is FOOTBALL … never ever think about calling it “soccer” – in england, for example, such a “verbal slander” might be dangerous to your health … ^^
shocked – Vohaul
Actually the word soccer originated here in England.
It comes from the term “Association Football”, which was used to designate games played under the Football Association rules, and to avoid confusion with Rugby Football, a very different game.
The word Association was commonly shortened to Soc. Hence “Soccer”.
This term hasn’t been used so much in the last 30 years, but I still remember it being in everyday use in the UK.

Many people who? Very few people here care about Kosteniuk. She needs to earn the right to play Polgar.
@phil – hopefully you do not use the “word” at the gate of an ENGLISH football stadium – it might be dangerous to your health, too … i assume ‘u are a well suited, highly literate commonwealth UK british chess player – e.g. from australia, canada, the U.S. or elsewhere out of england … (maybe scotland, wales or ireland … ^^)- but for sure “soccer-player” and even more “soccer-fan” are cusses amongst real football fans in good old england (NOT U.K.!!!!) … :))
^^ Vohaul
Vohaul, I am English, born 15 miles from Trafalgar Square. I have lived in England for 45 of my 46 years, and have diligently supported West Ham United since I was able to talk.
I think I am qualified…
The word soccer is not used so often these days, but it certainly doesn’t carry the danger you are suggesting.
The Daily Mirror, the UK’s second best selling newspaper, has a website called “soccerbase”. I think they are unlikely to get it so wrong . 🙂
@vohaul:
As I am a trained translator, I am aware of the difference between American and British English. And as this is a US blog, I used the American term. If it had been a British blog, I would have used the term “football”.
@phil harris:
Thanks for the info. I have been to Upton Park in the 90s twice and the atmosphere was very special (I’m forever blowing bubbles…).
Back to chess now?
Cheers,
Bernd
@phil – so you have seen the legendary Sir Geoffrey Hurst, before he made his non goal … you were happy enough to meet a Bobby Moore and to see a Gordon Banks live saving the bank of england … and for sure you know the green mile …
🙂 Vohaul
PS: i’m a great believer – and the “soccer-base” either in internet or the “Daily Mirror” (yellow press and founded as a women’s magazine in the early 20th century) is a humiliating “stock-exchange” for football players … *tusk *tusk …
… sarcasm rules … ^^ thx
@Bernd: chess is boring to non trained translators whilst the girls are kicking penalties… my chess is bad enough – even though i never ever lost hope … *hihi
PS2: of course i’m an **hole … but i like it …
