Estes chess club holds tournament

ASHEVILLE – The Estes Elementary chess club recently held its inaugural end-of-school-year chess tournament.

More than 30 students participated in the four-round open event.

Mia Lopez finished first, Paxton Pritchard placed second, and Nate Kampe placed third. Honorable mentions were given to Tyler Bell, Cooper Himan, Alex Jenkins, Claire Lim, Grant Haldeman and Luke Rheney.

The chess club was new to Estes Elementary this past school year and is led by Sarah Asbill and volunteer parents as well as assisted by members of the Koontz Intermediate chess team.

The club meets weekly on Thursday mornings and has more than 60 members.
