I ‘m getting old. Nice one btw
QxRc3+ KxRc3
Rxc6+ Kb3 or Kb2
RxBa6 QxRa6
BxQa6
Black is up a B+p in an endgame
1… Qxc3+
2. Kxc3 Rxc6+
3. Kb2 (or Kb3) Rxa6
White queen is trapped, black emerges a bishop up.
A good 15 seconds!
1…….Qxc3+.2.Kxc3.Rxc6+.3.Kb2/3.Rxa6.4.Qxa6.Bxa6 and black is a B up, a protected passed e pawn up, White King cut off from the e pawn for a easy black win!
1….QxR(c3)! will ultimately leave white with a Bishop down.as,
2.KxQ Rxc6+ 3.Kb2(Or b3) Rxa6! 4.QxR (The Queen don’t have an escape root)
4….BxQ (And white is a Bishop down without any compensation. Since there are plenty of pawns on the board black can easily win.)
Saw the key-move at once, but needed two minutes to spot its justification:
1. … Qxc3+!
2. Kxc3 or 2. … Qxe1 -+
2. … Rxc6+
3. Kb2/b3 Rxa6 and the queen has no safe square
4. Qxa6 Bxa6 -+
Black is a bishop and a pawn up plus he has a strong passed pawn.
1…..Qxc3+
2.Kxc3 Rxc6+
3.Kb2 Rxa6
4.Qxa6 Bxa6 and black is a piece up.
1…..Qxc3+
2.Kxc3 Rxc6+
3.Kb2 Rxa6
4.Qxa6 Bxa6 and black is a piece up.
1. … Qxc3+ 2. Kxc3 Rxc6+ 3. Kb2/b3 4.Rxa6 0-1
1. ……….., Qxc3+
2. Kxc3, otherwise R will be fork
2. ………., Rxc6+
3. Ka/b/c, Rxa6 Q is captured, easy win
Well, given that this was a posed problem, I saw QxR instantly- it took me about a minute, however, to understand that this was a pseudo-sacrifice since white can’t save the queen and must end up losing material in the end:
1. ……Qc3!
2. Kc3 Rc6!
3. Kb2 Ra6
And white’s queen must be given up for the rook, netting a bishop overall. White can probably win the b5 pawn as compensation by playing 4.Rd1. However, at this level white would just resign.
I see that Qxc3+ wins a bishop, but doesn’t Rxc6 win even more material? Huge threats on a6 and c3.
To the anonymous commenter who suggested 1. …Rxc6:
The problem is that black’s queen is hanging in the starting position (the pawn at f4 is threatening her capture. After that, the white queen can no longer be trapped by Rxa6 since Qc7+ is mate in 2.
