Qf3
Qf3 and how does black defend the rook?
If only he had remembered ‘knights before bishops…’
1 Qf3 Qd5
Taking the Knight first doesn’t change anything.
2 Qg3
White must win at least a piece.
Qf3 looks good here. There are three threats, but two of them occur on white’s second move:
1. Qf3
Attacking the rook at a8. I really only see one reply, but it was easy to see white’s reply to it:
1. …..Qd5 (blocking path to a8)
2. Qg3
Attacking the knight at b8, and g7 and the rook at h8. What should black do here? I am not really sure. I am torn between Ne7 and g6:
2. …..Ne7
3. Bb8 Nf5
4. Qc7 Qb7
5. Qb7 Bb7
6. Bf4 and white has won a piece for two pawns. At move 2, black can also play
2. …..g6
3. Bb8 Nf6
4. Qe5 Qe5
5. Be5 Ke7
6. Be2
And, again, white is up a piece for two pawns. Which line is better for black from move 2? I can’t really tell a difference.
Easy. 1. Bxb8 Rxb8 2. Rxa7 wins a pawn.
1. Q f3 Q d5
2. Q g3 Bxc3
3. bxc3 g7
4. Bxb8
And white wins a piece.
1. Q f3 Q d5
2. Q g3 Bxc3
3. bxc3 g7
4. Bxb8
And white wins a piece.
Winning material attacking the rook with a8 Qf3, and align Queen and Bishop on the diagonal with Qg3 to attack and threaten b8 knight and g7 threatening the rook of h8.
Winning material attacking the rook with a8 Qf3, and align Queen and Bishop on the diagonal with Qg3 to attack and threaten b8 knight and g7 threatening the rook of h8.
I like 1. Qf3 Qd5, 2. Qg3 hitting both b8 & g7.
maybe
1. Qf3 Qd5
2. Qg3 attacking g7 pawn and also threatening to take a whole knight?
Bxc4 followed by Qa4+ is another option
The best move is 1.Qf3 attacking the rook
1. …. Qd5 only move
2. Qg3 winning
To all who found the winnig move: it’s not that easy. You still have to really win the game — and any engine shows you that there are still are lot of nice (nasty?) tricks.
1.Qf3! Qd5 (or 1…Bxc3+ 2.bxc3 Qd5) 2.Qg3 attacks both the b8 knight and the g7 pawn (which means the h8 rook is also threatened )
