Be5+ wins the rook and the game.
It’s a win! …Bf5+ wins the rook; the only problem is that White is stalemated in the corner if Black then captures it. So throw in …g3+!! first. If Kxg3, then Bf5+ and take the rook without stalemate. If he doesn’t take it, then march the pawn to g2 and it queens, also winning.
i vote for g3 check 1st and then g2 and g1
ok, i take it back g3 kh3 g2 rxb and draw. i better think some more
win.. Be5+
1.g3 Kxg3 2.Be5+
Rarchinio, of course not, as after 1….Be5+ 2. Kh1 Bxd6 it is stalemate.
Solution: 1…. g3+! 2. Kh3 g2 3. Rxd4 g1=N+! and fork at the next move.
1.Be5 Kh1
2.Bxd6 stalemate
g3 check..THEN pick up the rook…or BE5 Checck Kh1 is stalemate…Be5 check right away blows the win.
@rarchinio
1..Be5+ 2. Kh1 Bxd6 leads to stalemate.
The correct continuation for black is
1..g3+! 2. Kh3 (2. Kxg3 Be5+ wins the rook, 2. Kh1 g2+ leads to a quick mate.)
2..g2!
Now if 3. Rxd4 g1N+! 4. K any move wins the rook by fork the next move.
If 3. R any other move like Rg6,
3..g1Q wins the rook.
g3+ (Be5+ Kh1 Bxd6 stalemate)
Kxg3 Be5+
Kany Bxd6 0-1
g3+
Kh1/h3 g2
any g1=q
1…Be5+? 2.Kh1 Bxd6 stalemate=
1…g3+ 2.Kh3 g2 3.Rxd4 g1/N= 4.K somewhere Ne2/f3 + 0-1
1… Be5+
2 Kh1 Bxd6 is stalemate,
so I think
1… g3+
is needed.
If white takes on g3, Be5+ and Bxd6gets the rook and I think the f-pawn is safe and will promote eventually.
If white doesn’t take g3, white will have to give the rook to prevent the g-pawn from promoting, and after that, the f-pawn will.
1. e3+ Kxe3
2. Be5+ Kf3
3. Bxd4
0-1
g3 wins
1. … g3
2. Kh3 (If Kh1, g2+ & g1=Q 0-1)
(If Kxg3, Be5+ wins the rook)
2. … g1=N!!
3. Kg3 Ne2+ wins the rook 0-1
(If Kh4/Kh2, Nf3+ wins 0-1)
@Rarchinio: Be5+ does not win.
1. … Be5+ 2. Kh1 Bxd6?? stalemate & draw
@ rarchinio
be5+ is draw
Black Wins.
Beginners will play ….Be5+But that leads to stalemate.
Best move for black is
1)….g3+
2)Kh3,g2
3)Rxd4,g1=N (Not Queen because it leads to draw)
4)Kh4 Nxd4
5)Kg5 Ke2
6)Kf4 Kf2
7)Kg5 Ke3
8)Kh4
Now it is acake walk for f pawn.

Black wins.
Best move for black is … g3+
Krishnamurthy
Be5 is not the correct move.
It leads to stalemate.
More over g Pawn reaches final square as a Knight and not Queen.
If Q is taken the game will lead to a draw.

Dear Susan,
Your end games are very interesting and challenging.
Please provide us with some games on opening traps and middle game strategies at times so that our knowledge and excitement would increase.

g3+ Kh3
g2 RxB
g1=N + King anywhere
N fork winning the rook and the game
rarchinio, wrong, as 1… Be5+
2. Kh1 Bxd6 stalemate =
1… g3+! first!
2. Kxg3 Be5+ wins
No, Be5+ forces stalemate
1… g3+
2.Kh3 (2.Kxg3 Be5+ -+)
2… g2
3.Rxd4 g1=N+
4.Kg3 Ne2+
5.Kf4 Nxd4
6.Ke3 Kg2
7.Kxd4 f4
wins for black
g3, Kh3
g2, Rxd4
g1=N K anywhere allows N fork and in moving K to pick up the N on d4, White must allow the Black K to escort the f pawn to queen
A trap. Be5+ leads to stalemate.
1. Kh1 BxR
White has no legal moves but is not in check.
Instead g3+
1. Kxg3 Be5+
2. Kf3 BxR
and a tedious B and pawn ending should lead to queening.
