Area students vie for chess titles in Stayner

STAYNER – A Collingwood elementary school was crowned the champs of the annual Simcoe-West Chess Tournament.
More than 160 students from Grades 4 through 8 spent Wednesday at the Stayner Community Centre pondering their next move on their way to checkmating their opponent.
St. Mary’s was the overall winner, with St. Noel Chabanel placing second, and Mountain View third.
Individual male and female first-, second, and third-place winners for each grade will be going on to the county-wide championships, March 25, at the Simcoe County District School Board education centre in Midhurst.
“It really is good for their brains,” said Chris Tucker, who has been volunteering with the event for the last 15 years, and has been organizing it for the last four. “It helps with analytical thinking, math skills, and organization.”
St. Noel Chabanel Grade 5 teacher Tricia Taylor started to play chess with her children, and continues to enjoy the game with her students.
“It’s great for concentration and logical thinking, and planning ahead” she said.
