Indestructible chess wings for Hungarian GM Prohazska

The 22-year-old GM Prohaszka (Hungary, 2585) maintains his perfect score and leads after the 6th round of the International Open Aegean Championship “Ikaros 2014”. He’s been followed by Khairallah (Lebanon, 2296), Hookham (Scotland, 2104), Nikolaidis (Greece, 2093) all with 5/6 and Gazis (Greece, 2214), Sienczewski (Poland, 2060), Skalkotas (Greece, 2183), Karagiannis (Greece, 2207) and the 12-year-old Mitsis (Greece, 1811) with 4.5/6.

Prohaszka, in contrast to the myth of Ikaros, keeps flying high at Ikaria, beating his opponents one after the other. In the 5th round he beat second seed GM Petr Velicka and in the 6th round he beat last year’s winner, Stathes Gazis.

130 participants, from 14 countries take part in “Ikaros 2014” tournament that is held for 37th consecutive year at the island of Ikaria. The organizers of the event are the Municipality of Ikaria and Ikaria Chess Club, while the sponsor of the tournament is the shipping company Hellenic Seaways.

Tournament directors are M. Venios and D. Skyrianoglou, chief arbiter is Ul. Vazelakis, pairings arbiter isM. Pagali, while arbiters are S. Kyriakou, P. Tamvakos, F. Aggelaki and K. Halioris. The appeals committee consists of N. Ornithopoulos, P. Velicka, V. Aristotelous, M. Mourouti and Ch. Kefalis who is also responsible for the bulleting of the tournament.

Game analysis, mainly of the younger participants, is provided by I. Kourkounakis who is also involves in a large part of the side-events.

The side events of 17th of July include a “live” chess game (with kids and students of Ikaria Chess Club actin as the pieces) at the central square of Aghios Kirykos and a guided tour of the tournament participants by A. Kalali at the Cultural and Folk Museum of Ikaria as an initiative of the local Cultural Club “Ioannis Melas”.

The side events of “Ikaros 2014” will continue after the tournament on 21st and 22nd of July but also throughout the rest of the summer. More information will be available at: http://www.ikaroschess.gr
