Spartan Inter-Collegiate chess set in June

MANILA – Some of the best chess players are set to see action in the 2013 Spartan Mining Philippine Inter-Collegiate Chess Team Championships on June 15 to 19 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
Backed by Spartan Mining and Development Corporation in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee, the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned tournament is open to all colleges and universities which may be represented by one or more teams.
Each team may be composed of four to five players who must be members of the NCFP.
Each member must be not be more than 26 years old and enrolled in the current semester in the school they represent and certified by their authorized school representative.
“[The] primary aim of this competition between and among universities and colleges is to determine from among the champions of collegiate leagues the national champion, not to mention its fostering camaraderie among student chess players and instilling in them values for good citizenship,” said Spartan Mining CEO and NCFP Director for Finance Luis Ramos.
The two-division (Men and Women) tournament will employ a straight nine-round Swiss system format.
Aside from getting the P30,000 prize, trophy and gold medals, the men’s champion will compete in the coming Asian Inter-Cities Chess Team Tournament in October.
Meanwhile, the women’s champion will bring home P20,000 cash prize, a trophy and gold medals.
