THE country’s top chess player, GM Wesley So, will be a major boost to the Philippine team bound for the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia on July 6-17 next year.

So, who is now a member of the so-called Magnificent 8 of Webster University in Missouri, USA, has accepted the offer by the Federation of School Sports Associations of the Philippines (Fessap) to be the country’s bet in chess.

So, who is rated no.66 of all the active players and ranked no.4 among the junior players in the world, is currently a member of the celebrated Susan Polgar Institute of Chess Excellence (Spice), and was given permission by Polgar herself to play for the country.

“It’s a big honor for all of us. His entry is a tremendous boost for the Philippine delegation to the Universiade,” said Fessap president David Ong in a press statement.

So’s confirmation came after the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (Fisu) gave the green light to the Philippines’ participation to the biennial games, exclusive for university athletes around the world.

So (2682) is a member of the first team of the Webster University in the 2012 PanAm Intercollegiate championship.
