Maurice Ashley!
my friend Kenny Solomon
I can tell a story about him. When the game of chess was still young, two players were arguing about which one of them was the proper owner of the Queen. So they brought their dispute before this GM. He heard their case and ruled that there should be this compromise:
“Let us divide this piece into two. One part will keep the pointy top, and will move only diagonally. The other part, with the flat top, will have the horizontal and vertical moves.”
The first player thought that was a fair division. But the second was aghast and exclaimed, “Horror—you can’t cut my baby Queen that way!” So the GM knew that the second player was the true owner, and eventually (well, about 2600 years after the time of Solomon) the rescued piece finally made her proud appearance on the chessboard.
