White’s back rank is weak!
1…. Bxc4
2. bxc4 Qb4! attacks both the rooks.
The rooks can defend each other only by 3. Raa1, but the black bishop is covering the ‘a1’ square.
1. … Bc4:
2. bc4: Qb4! is nasty. Back-ranko.
That weak back rank of white’s is a big juicy target, but it took me a while to find the right way to take advantage of it. The first move looks rather mundane, and I had initially dismissed it for this reason, but the second move by black is the real beauty here and the harder one to find:
1. …..Bc4
2. bc4 Qb4!
3. Raa1
Of course, 3.Rb4 allows the mate on the back rank, and anything else either allows Qa5 netting a rook, or allows Qb1 netting a king. Continuing:
3. …..Ba1
4. Ra1 Qb6 and black was won an exchange and a pawn.
1. … Bxc4 2. bxc4 Qb4 {Double attack on each of the rooks. The rook on b1 can’t capture the Black queen due to the back rank mate.} 3. Raa1 Bxa1 4. Rxa1 Qxb6 {Black is up the exchange and a pawn in a sound position.}
win the exchange with Qb4.
greets, jan
1. Bxc4 and 2. Qb4! and white is losing material.
1…Qb4! 2.Raa1 Bxa1 3.Rxa1 Bxc4 4.bxc4 Qxc4 wins an exchange and pawn.
1….Bxc4 2.bxc4 Qb4! and White either loses one rook or the other.
Qb4 looks very good!
Must win at least quality and pawn:
a)
1. … Qb4
2. Ra2? Bxc4 (bxc4 Qxc1#)
up with knigt
b)
2. Rxb5?? axb5
3. Ne3 Qxe4 (Nd2/Nd6 QxN)
up with full rook
c)
2. Rba1/Raa1 Bxa1
3. Rxa1 Bxc4
4. bxc4 Qxc4
up with quality and pawn
1-…. bxnc4 2-bxc4 qb4 and black win
a piece. alawadhi
1. – B x c4
If then 2. b x c4
2. – Qb4 and 3.R x b4 is followed by Rd1 mate.
3. Rba1 or other moves by Rb1 is followed by Q x b1 mate.
If 3. Raa1 then B x a1 and black has a decisiv advantage
The problem with Qb4 is that white can just play Bd3 or Rf1. After 2. …Bc4, white just plays Ra4 before retaking at c4.
1. …..Qb4?
2. Bd3 Bc4
3. Ra4 holds for white.
Dear pht,
In your
(c)Rba1 Bxc4 and now
(1)3bxc4 Qxa5 wins R due to back rank mate.
(2)3R(5)a4 Qd2 threatens mate at d1 and saves B at c4.
I am yet to concentrate on full solution.
Qb4 is strong.
1… Qb4 2. Bd3
Black is better but…
1… Bxc4
2. bxc4 Qb4!
exploits the weakness of the a-file
3. Raa1 Bxa1
4. Rxa1
I think more than enough… 🙂
Best regards
Stef
rank not file. I must remember.
Am I wrong, always. Sorry.
🙂
Ah, I not have explained why it is better 1…Bxc4
1… Qb4
Now
2. Bd3
And if
2…Bxc4 3. Ra4 Qxb6
4. Rxc4
🙂
Best regards
Stef
Yancey Ward, you are right. I had missed the move Ra4 forcing white to move the queen, so he don’t get time to save the bishop.
Of course 1 … Bxc4 must be the right solution.
