Anatoly Karpov turns 60 today! Happy Birthday to my friend, one of the greatest World Champions in history!
He won over 160 tournaments, which is a record. His peak rating was 2780. He spent a total of 90 months as the #1 player in the world, which is only 2nd to Kasparov.
Which is your all time favorite Karpov game?
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Karpov is King!
Favorite Karpov game? That’s a tough question, since there are so many great ones to choose from, but my favorite is (drum roll):
Karpov vs. Topalov, Linares, 1994
Lenya Gristmilli 🙂
Not a single game but the 1984 match with Kasparov. Dramatic.
Happy Birthday to him! He’s one of my favourite players. I think alot can be learned from his games. I don’t have a favourite game, but I really like the game Korchnoi-Karpov, from 4, Moscow Ale mem 1971. An English Symmetrical. Karpov wins with very smooth positional play. A fantastic player.
Of course, 🙂

Nobody Italian before him had achieved the Grandmaster title.
But please read here.
The problem of the professional player in Italy still exist.

One of Karpov’s many gems is this game against Spassky in 1974 Candidates Semifinals: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1067813
He sacs a bishop in return for breaking up Spassky’s position. Spassky counter attacks, but is a tempo too short.
Don’t know what computers think of it today, but it looked like an amazingly accurate game at the time.
Dear Susan, this game comes to mind: Karpov-Sax, Linares 1983.
