GIBRALTAR’S DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER VISITS

TRADEWISE CHESS FESTIVAL

Gibraltar’s Deputy Chief Minister Joe Holliday paid a visit to the Tradewise Chess Festival 2011 today. In th Alice Suite at the Caleta Hotel, where the main concentration of play in the Gibraltar Masters is taking place every afternoon starting 3pm, the Minister was shown round by festival director Stuart Conquest, and event organiser Brian Callaghan.

Mr Holliday, a chess player himself, spent a few minutes analysing the games on the main boards. Admitting he had a soft sport for the game of chess, he said, it was clear that the Tradewise Chess Festival, and Gibraltar itself, had made and continued to “make its mark on the world of chess”.

The Deputy Chief Minister spoke of the amazing growth of the festival pointing out that it was easy to see how it had grown from one year to the next. The orgnaisers, he added, were now also looking forward to the tenth anniversary of the festival next year and were keen to make it even bigger and better.

“It is very impressive to see the many number of players representing over 50 countries from all over the world making their moves and particiapting in the festival,” he said.
