I have been overlooked for the Asian Games: Humpy PTI, Oct 30, 2010, 06.43pm IST
NEW DELHI: India’s number one ranked women chess player Koneru Humpy on Saturday alleged that she has been overlooked for the upcoming Asian Games in Guangzhou next month.
A day after the All Indian Chess Federation (AICF) announced that world champion Viswanathan Anand and Koneru Humpy have pulled out of the Asian Games, the winner of two gold medals of 2006 Doha Asian Games, Humpy minced no words in saying that given a chance she would have loved to represent India.
“I have not pulled out of Asian Games but denied an entry. I wish the federation could have shown some respect to international players and their prior engagements,” an upset Humpy said.
“Playing for India is always the top most priority and I would have loved to play for country and win a gold medal.
“The Indian Chess Federation wanted me to attend a training camp before the Asian Games but they should have looked at my international commitments and taken my performance into account before rejecting my case,” the world number two added.
Humpy, the highest ranked Indian in the world, has an international rating of 2593 points and is behind Judith Polgar of Hungary.
“All my appeals to the federation have fallen flat and that left me really disappointed. What can I do if the parent chess body is not willing to give a chance to the defending champion?
“I have also written to India’s sports minister MS Gill but I am yet to get a reply,” Humpy said.
People like AICF secretary(‘honourable’ FIDE vice president) D V Sunder and IOC president Suresh Kalmadi does not have any national interest. Their personal glory and other interests will kill the respective games. If a player at the highest level like Humpy is facing bans like this how the common parents will lead their little girls into this beautiful game. Humpy should have written to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, or Prime minister Manmohan Singh whose intervention has finally made the Delhi Commonwealth games a success.
I maintain that this beautiful chess player is not being treated with fairness in India. The same country that questioned Anand’s citizenship. Anand made his millions; if I were Bill Gates, I would sponsor Koneru so that she could enjoy life, the game of chess and travel.
What an injustice to this beautiful and amazing talent! That they did not respect Anand’s and Koneru’s prior engagements is a slap in the face to these giants in chess. Pathetic… AICF… pathetic.
Mr.Sundar actually holds positions and influence in various indian sporting organisations like table tennis etc. At least in chess, if the association is very bad, a player can go to different tournaments without any involvement with the chess federation. To put it into a few words, Mr.Sundar has been sabotaging various sportsmans careers for the better part of 2 decades. He once even slapped an indian grandmaster for losing a game in a team tournament.
if i see that sundar bastard, sure the immediate thing that i would do is to slap on his face…so stupid fellow not deserving to live on this planet… sorry susan for this type of comment, but no other way to reward such society nuisances…Vijay
We(India) have some of the best chess players in the world. And these dirty politiciansadministrators are ruining their careers. Its not the first time they have made life difficult for Koneru. Even Anand had to go through a lot like e.g. so called “citizenship issue”. If we don’t get rid of those administroatorspoliticians now, we are destined to loose a lot of potential – similar to what happened to our national sport – hockey in 80s. -HH
There seems to be some question of whether Humpy was denied an opportunity, or denied herself the opportunity. It’s the usual scene.
Your headline suggests only the first scenario.
MS Gill?
Gill is not an Indian name.
He is probably like some other rat bastard like Goichiberg who likes other peoples money and knows nothing about the sport of chess.
Chess politicians hurt chess.

Dear Susan, why dont you put a helping hand.
Bill Goichberg is the biggest chess destroyer in the US. Sundar is trying to copy him.

Hello from Florida!
Sunder,Goichberg,Gill – all evil self serving adminis’traitors’. People with brains and talent play the game and these guys feed off them.

Become World Champion Humpy and they don’t longer dare to treat you bad. Or play for another country. Spain for example.
Come play for America. Kosteniuk plans on vacating her gravy train.
