Wesley So nears over-all crown in Corus tourney

Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So is now just a step away from the over-all championship in the 71st Corus Chess Tournament after regaining the lead with two straight victories as the competition nears its close Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

According to SportsNews.ph, the 15-year-old So scored successive victories over International Master (IM) Manuel Bosboom of the Netherlands in the 11th round and erstwhile leader GM Tiger Hillarp Persson of Sweden in the 12th and penultimate round.

The Bacoor-based wizard now has a total of 9 points on seven wins, four draws and only one loss.

So now only has to score a successful finish in the 13th and last round of the category-11 tournament to claim the overall win.

Among the participants, only Russian GM-elect Anish Giri of has a chance to catch So in first place.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay and secretary-general Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino reportedly lauded So’s impressive showing, saying his success in the prestigious Dutch tournament is a source of joy not only in the chess community but in the whole country as well.
