1…Qe7 2. Nd7! What do we do now?
2. Rxd7? Bxd7 Qxd7 Qxe3 and white’s king is now going to be annoyingly checked.
2. Bxf5? doesn’t work I don’t think because of Rxf5!
1. Qe7, bd7
(1…nxe7, 2. qxf8 mate)
(1…qf6 or 1…qg7, 2. rxc7 wins)
2. rxd7, nxd7
3. qxd7.
now if 3…qxe3
4. rxc7, qxe2+
5. bg2
now mate on g7 + h7 simultaneously cannot be stopped. …qh5 or …rg8 saves only one of the squares.
instead of 3…qxe3, if 3…qf6 or 3…qg7, then 4. rxc7 wins.
better is 3…rbd8
now if:
4. qxc7, qxc7
5. rxc7.
now if 5…rd2, 6. bf1.
better is 5…rd3, 6. nf1. rxb3. it does give black a strong passed pawn.
on 3…rbd8, if
4. qe7, rfe8
5. qg5. rd2
6. bf1, rg8
7. qf4, qxq
8. gxf4, ne8
and the white b3 pawn will fall.
so who knows!

Is there any defense to 1. Ng4 that doesn’t lose a piece?
Well, I looked at 1 Qe7 for a while, but either …Bd7 or …Nd7 seem to perry the double-attack on black’s knight on c7 and rook on f8, and it’s just not clear at all how to proceed from there.
My suggestion is 1…Ng4!
This utilizes the ‘undermine the defender’ theme, trying to chase the queen away from her protection of the attacked knight on c7, while taking advantage of f-pawn being pinned to the queen, so that white’s knight is not in danger. Furthermore, it moves the white knight closer to the attack on the kingside, where the black king is trapped in the corner.
1 Ng4 Qg7 (forced, as this is the only square that protects the knight on c7 — if black tries, say, …Qe4, 2 RxN Rg8 3 Nf6!! forking the queen and rook and threatening multiple mates QxR++ and Rxh7++) so now…
2 QxQ+ KxQ
3 RxN+ and white scarfs the knight with check, then moves his knight out of danger, and white is a piece up, right?
