Today is May 22, 2008. It is 7 days past the latest extension by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov for bids in the Topalov – Kamsky match. There is still no word from either side other than skepticism by Topalov’s manager IM S. Danailov.
The last news is the “official” bid from Lvov (or Lviv) is for $750,000 + extras ($935,000 total). The money was supposed to have been transferred but no one including the organizer or FIDE can confirm it. No one even knows which bank the money was supposed to come from.
Here are some of the recent development:

What should FIDE do now? What do you expect to happen?
Skip both of them and only concentrate on Anand and Kramnik.
Confirm the Sofia bid and get on with it. The bid has been extended repeatedly and still no result.
It is interesting though that the Anand/Kramnik match has prizemoney of 2.3 million USD, but the Sofia bid or Lvov is much, much less.
Why rush it?? This back and forth is the most interesting thing that will actually come out of this match….which will be one of the most boring matches ever. Topalov is going to crush Kamsky as an Amtrak train running over a hostess twinki.
Could have something to do with Anand-Kramnik being a match for the title, garvin.
What does the Bulgarian patzer have against U.S. Patriot Twinkie?
Okay.
I don’t think there should be any rush but some finality has to come. There obviously are some “closed door” negotiations going on or FIDE would just replace Kamsky, though, he rightfully earned the spot to play Topalov.
Everyone these days are in such a hurry to get information….things will work out eventually. There’s a reason no news has surfaced and it will all come to everyone’s attention eventually.
uh why should FIDE replace Kamsky? This isn’t the issue here, it’s just whether the match will take place in Bulgaria or Ukraine.
IF Kamsky refuses to play in Bulgaria he should be replaced but we are not even at the stage where that question is relevant.
We have all this postponement because Kamsky (or better said – his representatives) threatened that he won’t play in Bulgaria under any circumstances.
Thats why FIDE even made a “back-up” plan which says that in case Kamsky refuses to play, he will be replaced with Shirov (World cup 2007 runner-up). If Shirov also refuses, Topalov gets a bye. If Topalov refuses to play, Kamsky gets a bye.
So yes, Kamsky’s refusal to play in Bulgaria IS an issue. Thats why FIDE is granting any possible requests, so that the match would happen. But soon they will have to stop this charade. And then uninformed people will blame FIDE again.
FIDE may be Kirsan’s private organization with corrupt and incompetent people, but this time it is not FIDE’s fault. It’s Kamsky’s fault and people around him.
Back-up plan? Sure, but they always have one. It’d nothing to do with any particular concern that Kamsky would not play. When did he or anybody around him say categorically that he would absolutely not play in Bulgaria?
This was written by Roustam Kamsky in an open letter to FIDE president.
“Therefore due to numerous prior violations and an improper FIDE rule changes regarding participation of GM Topalov and GM Kramnik in the 2008 World Championship it is hereby respectfully requested that FIDE allocates a sum of $1,000,000 to organize and sponsor the Topalov-Kamsky match in a neutral country. If this reasonable request is not met, I believe that GM Kamsky will have no other recourse as to protect his rights in a court of law.”
In short: Give 1 milion dolars and neutral venue or you can forget about the match. Few days later FIDE designed the back-up plan.
