PRESS RELEASE №3

September 23, 2010

The 3rd round of the 39th Chess Olympiad brought serious problems for some of the favorites. Despite the difference in ratings, some of the less distinguished teams managed to give their opponents a decent fight.

In the main event the second seed Ukrainian team was unable to beat Croatia (28), and Poland (15) drew with Bosnia and Herzegovina (32). Strong teams from Israel (11) and France (10) were paired with each other and drew their match, too.

14 teams won three matches in a row. The leaders according to the tiebreak score are Russia-2 (4th seed), Chine (3) and Armenia (6). Russia-1 defeated Italia 3-1 and occupies the 7th place.

Some important matches were drawn in the women event, including Germany (16) vs. Russia-2 (5), and Croatia (27) vs. Romania (14). Bulgaria (12) defeated Poland (10) in a close match.

11 teams collected the maximum number of team points in the first three rounds. The current leaders are Ukraine (3), Georgia (4), and USA (6).

The main favorites of the competition Russia-1 defeated Slovakia 3,5-0,5 and occupy the 6th place.

The Russian player Nadezhda Kosintseva said at the press-conference: “The tension increases day after day. The Olympiad is a very demanding tournament, and we have additional pressure of high expectations as a home team. Our main goal is to cope with the stress well”.
