The 2010 SPICE Cup will take place on Thursday, October 28 – Sunday, November 7 at the beautiful campus of Texas Tech University. The prestigious event is growing bigger every year. It is expected to be even higher rated than the 2009 SPICE Cup, which is the highest rated international invitational tournament in U.S. history to date.
To make the tournament a lot more exciting, the SPICE Cup committee has unanimously voted to adapt the following new rules for the A group:
– No draw offer allowed prior to move 30
– A win = 3 points, a draw = 1 point, and loss = 0 point
Confirmed players:
GM Wesley So (
GM Georg Meier (
GM Ray Robson (
GM Eugene Perelshteyn (
We are working on finalizing the agreement for the final player. The format of the A group will once again be a 6-player DRR (category 16) event.
The B group will be a 10-player (category 10-11) RR event. The players confirmed for B group so far is GM Kuljasevic (2551), GM Finegold (2530), IM Krush (2476), IM Ippolito (2458), IM Rensch (2404), FM Yang (2396), and 3 more have been tentatively confirmed.
We are planning to add a C group for 2010 in addition to an Open Tournament.
Vasilly Smyslov passed away today…
Smyslov died 🙁
“A win = 3 points, a draw = 1 point, and loss = 0 point”.
I think that is a bad system.
What’s so difficult about agreeing with a player that they will play.
The SP Foundation has the money: just spend some!
GM Onischuk will beat everyone to a pulp.
No norms this time.
I am enjoying the afterlife!
All the chess you want, free root beer, and Bobby Fischer has to play in the under 1000 section for eternity for his anti-Semitic views.
I am having a hard time beating some guy who calls himself “Ygg”. He claims to have invented chess. He gave it to the world disguised as a roving one-eye warrior.
He claims to have visited earth recently at the Lubbock open disguised as an anal retentive senior TD.
V.
How about Alex Lenderman for the 6th spot.
His live rating is up to 2660 and he is only 20 years old.
Forget Lenderman. A real GM is necessary.
His FIDE rating is 2553, not near 2600. Nearly 50 FIDE rating points is a massive difference.
What have the US based GM’s done to deserve a shot? Bring over a young gun from Europe and have them show the US young GM’s how it’s done.
I am glad to see IM Krush back for the 2010 SPICE Cup. I’m looking forward to seeing the line-up for the C Group. Kudos to you and Texas Tech for making this event bigger and better each year.
Thanks for making such high caliber tournaments possible in US!
Not only is it good for American chess in general, it gives promising young talent fantastic opportunities to show their stuff!
