Barua clinches GM chess title

Dhaka, Aug 29 (bdnews24.com) – Indian GM Dibyendu Barua won the ninth United Insurance & United Leasing Grandmasters Chess Tournament with 7.5 points after beating GM Rustam Khusnutdinov of Kazakistan in the 10th and last round at the NSC Tower Auditorium on Saturday, says a Bangladesh Chess Federation press release.

GM Mchedlishvili Mikheil and GM Gagunashvili Merab of Georgia earned seven points each. After a tie-breaking system, Mchedlishvili became runner-up and Gagunashvili third.

Mehdi Hasan Parag, Igor Rausis of Czech Republic and GM Tejas Bakre earned 6.5 points each. Parag became fourth, Rausis (fifth) and Bakre (sixth) respectively following tie-breaking system.

Seven players earned six points each and got the seventh to 13th positions. They were Bitan Banerjee, GM Reefat Bin Sattar, Praveen Kumar and GM Neelotpal Das of India, GM Rustam Khusnutdinov of Kazakistan, GM Enamul Hossain Razib and GM Abdullah Al Rakib.

In the day’s 10th round matches, Dibyendu beat Khusnutdinov, Gagunashvili drew with Rausis, Mechedlishvili drew with Rakib, Parag beat GM Anuar Ismagambetov of Kazakistan, Bakre beat Reefat, Praveen drew with Neelotpal, Bitan drew with IM Atanu Lahiri of India, Razib beat Debaraj Chatterjee.

Commerce Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan distributed prizes among the winners.

Dibyendu Barua received $1,600, runner-up Mchedlishvili and Gagunashvili $800 each. Parag, Rausis and Bakre each got $333, Bitan, Reefat, Praveen, Neelotpal, Khisnutdinov, Razib and Rakib earned $114 each.

A total of 40 players, including eleven GMs, two IMs, eleven FMs from six countries took part in the 10-round Swiss League system meet.

Syed Aziz Ahmad, director, United Insurance Limited Company and vice-president of Bangladesh Chess Federation were also present.
