There are 900 players between the National Open and SP events. Impressive.
I agree that it is a fun family event. Contrary to popular belief, casinos in Las Vegas are no longer off limits to kids, although the minimum age to gamble is still 21.
Unfortunately, the National Open keeps moving up each year. It used to be the third weekend of June and now it is the first weekend of June. Consequently, more children still have school and older kids have final exams coming up. This is also a SAT testing weekend.
This tournament used to be shortly after kids got out of school, but no longer! I know that the event loses at least a dozen entries from my group of kids alone.

Sorry Michael! As you know, I do not make the schedule. My event goes together with the dates of the National Open.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
I am not saying GM Polgar or even organizer Alan Losoff are personally responsible for moving up the dates of the tournament. No doubt this change was due to other conventions booking more desirable dates at the Riviera. It is sad for chess and no doubt the schedule change costs the National Open and the SP events at least 100 and maybe up to 200 young players.
