Grandmaster Susan Polgar, who is in India as a commentator for the World Chess Championship, is pleased with the talent in the country. She believes that overall women’s chess has improved from the time she started playing and is confident that India will be a force to reckon with in world chess. Excerpts:

On the state of women’s chess today?

There are a lot more good female players today. However, I was hoping for even bigger progress.

Is women’s chess getting enough exposure in terms of tournaments and recognition?

It is much better than it used to be. But more improvement is needed. As the chairperson of the women’s commission in FIDE, I am working hard to improve things.

What are the areas you think that requires improvement?

Opportunity to make a living in chess. Unless women can make a decent living in chess, it will be hard for them to stick to the game for long.

The players you admire the most

Many such as Jose Capablanca, Bobby Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, Viswanathan Anand and, of course, Magnus Carlsen.
