I don’t think I will notice the tactic if it occurred in my game.
Both black Q & B are overworked.
1.Qxc7! bolt from the blue.
(a)1…. Qxc7 2.Rxe8#
(b)1…. Bxc7 2.Nf6+ Kh8 3.Nxd7 White is a piece up.
(c)counter sacrifice 1… Qxg4 eliminating possibility of Nf6+ does not work because of 2.Rxe8#
Q x c7 !
If black re-captures with the Queen, R x e7 is checkmate. If black re-captures with the bishop, Nf6+ wins the Queen.
Or am I missing something?
1. Qxc7
QxN
1 QxKc7 … 1-0
An obvious idea is to remove/deflect defenders of e8 to allow R(x)e8#.
Many ideas here, but it seems difficult to make them work.
Hmmm…..
There is the fork Nf6 also. Deflecting Bc7 is therefore an idea:
1. Qxc7! Bxc7 (Qxc7?? Rxe8#)
2. Nf6+ Kh8
3. Nxd7
is up with a piece.
1. … Rxe1+
2. Rxe1 Bxc7 (Qxc7?? Re8#)
3. Nf6+
is the same.
So 1. Qxc7 simply wins the knight!
It’s
1. Qxc7 .. Bxc7; (1 .. Rxe1 2. Rxe1 just exchange rooks in a position favourable to White)
2. Nf6+ (the point of the Q sacrifice)
2. .. Kh8; forced
3. Nxd7 +-.
1.Qxc7
The best thing against a GM is a stout hammer – after
1. Qd6! the black queen is lost.
1. … Qxd6 2.Rxe8+ Qf8 3.Rxf8#
1. … Rxe1+ 2.Rxe1 and the queen cannot protect square e8.
Best for Black seems
1. … Qe7
2. Rxe7 Rxe7 gaining a rook for the queen, but the position is totally hopeless.
1.Qxc7!!! Wins a piece at least for white!
A>1……Qxc7.2.Rxe8#,
B>1……Rxe1+.2.Rxe1.Qxc7.3.Re8#!
C>1……Bxc7.2.Nf6+!.Kh8.3.Nxd7! And W is up a piece!
D>1……Rxe1+.2.Rxe1.Bxc7.3.Nf6+!.Kh8.4.Nxd7 and W is up a piece!
Fajac,
1.Qd6!? Loses immediately as W is a Q down for nothing!
1……..Qxd6.
2.Rxe8!.Nxe8!!!
