A question hung in the air Saturday morning as high school chess players gathered in Rochester for their annual championship tournament: Would Mayo High School finish its Cinderella season on top?

Last year, the team forfeited its final matches because it didn’t have a coach to organize them, according to Chuck Handlon, secretary of the five-team Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League.

On Saturday, however, Mayo and its new coach, John Lust of Rochester, entered the championship tournament as the top-seeded team, boasting an undefeated team record.

“Instead of being the doormat, they’re the team to beat now,” Handlon said as players leaned over their boards at the start of play at Lourdes High School.

Unfortunately for Mayo, the team lost its first match to fourth-seeded Century, which went on to beat John Marshall for the local varsity chess championship.

Mayo beat Lourdes for third place.
